about

This music was composed for the pilot episode of a series written by Kate and Michael Barnes for Florida Public Television in 1998. Although the series was never produced, that episode and its music remain.

The foot-stomping Kitchen Jig is the theme music. Picture Kate’s kitchen in the Brice farmhouse, directly across from Margorie Kinnen Rawlings’s home and site of the 1983 film Cross Creek. Two women are good-naturedly bumping into one another in the small space to prepare a meal for the family. Kate’s Yard is the first look at the exterior of the house, set to a quiet and serene Southern tune. Dry Summer is a quiet, empty piece for a torched land without rain, with a few cultivated citrus trees bravely weathering the heat. View from the Porch sees Kate gazing out from a wrap-around porch to the beauty of the barn, the orchard beyond and the quaint farmyard of the Brice house. A few toads sleep in the heat at the bottom of the stone pond; palm tree limbs rustle in an afternoon breeze; a single car passes, but nothing disturbs the peace of this moment.

I’m told that the film did little justice to Rawlings, who was, in the words of my sister Sheila, now park ranger of the Rawlings home, a “tough old broad.” Here’s the servant’s cabin in a heavy drought.
